Sumner & Keusch Service was first established in 1936 on 118 E. Grand River as a gas & auto service. Partner Tom Keusch left to serve in WWII. Upon returning home, he bought out his partner Mike Sumner in 1950. It then became Keusch Service. Tom’s three sons, Tom, Dick & Bob all worked there growing up. Son, Richard (Dick) started working when he was 8 yrs old in 1957. He then joined the Marines in 1962.

Returning home Dick continued to work there & decided to make it his career. In 1974, Dick & his Dad purchased the condemned Divine Hotel, which had once served many dignitaries & tourists traveling from Detroit to Grand Rapids on the only main highway, known as US 16. The hotel was torn down and Dick expanded the auto bays. Dick also purchased the business at that time. Soon after, his brother Bob became a partner, naming it KSS.

Their sister, Mary Jo was bookkeeper. Dick & Bobs children all worked there growing up. Dick bought out his brother in Jan 2003. Three of Dick’s six sons, Adam, Alex & Ted purchased the business in Jan 2009. In Dec 2012 they relocated their auto, tire & towing business from downtown to the Vollman Ford building by the highway.

Today Keusch Super Service is running exceptionally well due to hard work and most importantly a committed staff!
